J’ai essayé de compter pour voir si elles étaient à peu près équitablement espacées. Peine perdue, leur présence est totalement anarchique. Parfois, on passe une journée entière à marcher en suivant une direction, sans être sûr d’être sur la bonne route. On doute, on regarde l’astre du jour pour se rassurer : toujours à l’est. On suit ce qu’on croit être une piste. Mais ça n’en est sûrement pas une. Une illusion se dit-on. On se couche alors le soir en se disant qu’on a fait fausse route. Et puis le lendemain, paf, une balise, on respire. D’autre fois, on croise une balise toutes les heures. Alors on avance confiant, sûr d’aller dans le bon sens. Mais la plupart du temps, on croise à peine deux ou trois bornes par jour. Et encore, il faut voir l’état de celles-ci. Autant au début de la route, elles avaient un aspect à peu près correct. Mais depuis qu’on s’est enfoncé dans ce qui semble être le fameux labyrinthe, ce ne sont que de vieux bouts de bois couverts de mousse et en état de décomposition avancée qu’on a du mal à repérer dans la végétation.

Parlons-en de la végétation. Une alternance de forêts et de jungles avec entre les deux biotopes, une transition disons… abrupte. Faut grimper quoi. Et quand je dis grimper, c'est pas un vain mot. Je m'attendais à une pente, comme pour accéder à la Source Cachée depuis la forêt matisse. Mais non, c'est de la véritable escalade. Je crois que c'est des sortes de grosses racines touffues qui séparent les deux biotopes, pas de la falaise à pic. On peut s'accrocher à ces marches gigantesques pour monter. Il y a même parfois des balises murales qui vous indiquent la direction. C'est une horreur que de grimper, en portant son sac, en poussant par derrière les mektoubs pour ne pas qu'ils glissent, tout en s'accrochant à une main aux touffes de végétation qui poussent sur la racine. Si Eeri n'avait pas été là, j'aurais pleuré. Oui, je l'écris : c'est la chose la plus physique que j'ai jamais fait. Même l’entraînement chez les Légions Fyros était plus facile.

Une fois en haut, on se rend compte qu'on a changé de biotope. On cherche la balise suivante et c'est reparti. Après plusieurs jours de marche ininterrompue dans la forêt, une autre racine géante, mais à descendre cette fois. Et on alterne ça encore et encore. C'est simple, ça monte, c'est la forêt ; ça descend, on sait alors qu’on va passer aux ragus et autres najabs de la jungle. Et le tout sans crever et sans se perdre dans cette immensité interminable. Sur la carte, c'est marqué « Zone dangereuse ». J'ose pas imaginer ce que ce sera dans la Mer de Bois ou le Désert Morcelé.

Le pire pour l'instant, c'est la forêt. La Masure de l’Hérétique à côté, c’est un chemin d’agrément. À chaque croisement, on doit passer un moment à chercher la balise qui nous indiquera la bonne direction. Oh, quand on n’est pas pressé, ça va. Mais quand vous avez un troupeau de jugulas qui vous colle aux fesses, c’est moins drôle. Pourtant on essaie de les éviter ces bestioles, mais il faut croire qu’elles adorent se planquer derrière un arbre ou une racine, pour vous choper par surprise. Alors on avance au pas, lentement. On renifle pour sentir si y’a pas comme une odeur de jugula dans l’air. Ou de torbak. Mais eux encore, ils sont moins vicieux.

Et puis… il y a la jungle et ses najabs, la jungle et ses ragus qui vous courent après pour faire de vous leur prochain repas. On n’a pas croisé d’ocyx par contre. J’ai envie de dire tant mieux. Je veux pas savoir ce que ça fait une brûlure de feu d’ocyx dans un monde où, j'ai cru comprendre, la magie kamique n’est plus là pour réparer nos blessures. On a réussi jusqu’ici à éviter les coups, donc impossible à vérifier. Et me scarifier exprès pour vérifier, on verra plus tard. Après, y’a bien eu ce coup de griffe de jugula sur mon armure avant-hier. Mais rien qui n’ait touché la chair. Le feu d’ocyx par contre, je sais par expérience qu’il traversera l’armure, aussi fyrosse soit-elle. Pas de kitins non plus, que ce soit dans la forêt ou dans la jungle, et aucun des gibbaïs aperçus de temps en temps au loin n'a jugé bon de nous rendre une petite visite de courtoisie. Toujours concernant la jungle, à un moment donné, on est rentré dans une sorte de tunnel. J'ai cru qu'on allait passer à un biotope du type Prime Racines, mais pas du tout. C'est resté la jungle. On était peut être pas assez en profondeur pour qu'il y ait de changement environnemental. Je ne sais pas, j'en bave tellement que je suis bien incapable d'avoir une réflexion sur ce que je vois en ce moment. Alors je note et on verra plus tard, à tête reposée. Si on arrive à Fort-le-Phare un jour par exemple…

Ah oui, et le plus beau : aujourd'hui on a déjà perdu un de nos deux mektoubs. Faut dire que l'escalade, c'est déjà pas pratique pour nous homins, mais pour des mektoubs chargés à bloc, c'est juste pas possible. Ce foutu mektoub a glissé en descendant une de ces énormes racines et s'est éclaté la tête plus bas. Et bien sûr, la plupart des potions que j’avais emmenées ont été brisées dans l'accident. Heureusement, je garde les morceaux de cuir de varinx dans mon sac. Eeri se moque de moi et de mes « priorités ». Mais garder une trace, c’est le plus important. En voyant le toub éclaté, elle a rigolé puis a dit simplement : faudra s'attacher avec le toub restant la prochaine fois. Je sais pas comment elle fait pour garder sa capacité à rire puis redevenir sérieuse la seconde d'après.. Même quand j’ai pris ce coup de griffe de jugula, elle a trouvé le moyen de rigoler et de me vanner. Y’a des Fyros, ils sont faits d’un autre bois. Ou alors c’est le début de la folie.

Toujours concernant la jungle, à un moment donné, on est rentré dans une sorte de tunnel. J'ai cru qu'on allait passer à un biotope du type Prime Racines, mais pas du tout. C'est resté la jungle. On était peut être pas assez en profondeur pour qu'il y ait de changement environnemental. Je ne sais pas, j'en bave tellement que je suis bien incapable d'avoir une réflexion sur ce que je vois en ce moment. Alors je note et on verra plus tard, à tête reposée. Si on arrive à Fort-le-Phare un jour par exemple…

 Ah oui, et le plus beau : aujourd'hui on a déjà perdu un de nos deux mektoubs. Faut dire que l'escalade, c'est déjà pas pratique pour nous homins, mais pour des mektoubs chargés à bloc, c'est juste pas possible. Ce foutu mektoub a glissé en descendant une de ces énormes racines et s'est éclaté la tête plus bas. Et bien sûr, la plupart des potions que j’avais emmenées ont été brisées dans l'accident. Heureusement, je garde les morceaux de cuir de varinx dans mon sac. Eeri se moque de moi et de mes « priorités ». Mais garder une trace, c’est le plus important. En voyant le toub éclaté, elle a rigolé puis a dit simplement : faudra s'attacher avec le toub restant la prochaine fois. Je sais pas comment elle fait pour garder sa capacité à rire puis redevenir sérieuse la seconde d'après.. Même quand j’ai pris ce coup de griffe de jugula, elle a trouvé le moyen de rigoler et de me vanner. Y’a des Fyros, ils sont faits d’un autre bois. Ou alors c’est le début de la folie.

 Parlons-en de la végétation. Une alternance de forêts et de jungles avec entre les deux biotopes, une transition disons… abrupte. Faut grimper quoi. Et quand je dis grimper, c'est pas un vain mot. Je m'attendais à une pente, comme pour accéder à la Source Cachée depuis la forêt matisse. Mais non, c'est de la véritable escalade. Je crois que c'est des sortes de grosses racines touffues qui séparent les deux biotopes, pas de la falaise à pic. On peut s'accrocher à ces marches gigantesques pour monter. Il y a même parfois des balises murales qui vous indiquent la direction. C'est une horreur que de grimper, en portant son sac, en poussant par derrière les mektoubs pour ne pas qu'ils glissent, tout en s'accrochant à une main aux touffes de végétation qui poussent sur la racine. Si Eeri n'avait pas été là, j'aurais pleuré. Oui, je l'écris : c'est la chose la plus physique que j'ai jamais fait. Même l’entraînement chez les Légions Fyros était plus facile.
